The visualisation captures educational attainment of individual SC groups overall, and for rural and urban areas separately. Educational attainments are shown for men and women separately as well.
1. The thin grey line indicates the range between the SC group in a state with the maximum educational attainment, and the minimum. The wider the line, the bigger the difference. 2. The blue box, however, is a better summary of the differences across SC groups in a state. The starting point of the box (A) is where 25% of SC groups in the state have educational attainments below this level. The end point (B) is where 25% of SC caste groups have educational attainments above this level. The vertical line in the box is the median, where the number of castes above equals the number of castes below. Ideally, one wants a box with minimum width (lower variance among SC groups) and to the right (higher education levels on the whole). 3. The blue dot indicates average educational performance among dalits, as compared to non-dalits (yellow dot). The bigger the disparity in educational attainment between dalits and non-dalits, the greater the distance between these two dots. The vertical lines indicate state-wide and national averages (for the entire population).SC population is expressed as total SC population (with any education status) in selected age group, location, gender and state, as percent of total population with those same parameters.
