States' Education Budget as a share of Total State Budget in 2021-22

Government spending in critical social and economic sectors, including education, have been much discussed at the backdrop of the pandemic. This metric shows a comparative picture of how states are budgeting for education vis-à-vis their total budgets, which can be a measure of the priority accorded to the education sector. Among the non-special category states, Delhi spends the highest proportion of its state budget on education, followed by Chhattisgarh and Bihar. Assam, among the special category states, spends the highest proportion on education.

1. 'Education Budget' here includes total budgets of a state's education related departments like Departments of Elementary, Secondary, Higher, Technical and Adult Education, Sports, Youth, Art and Culture etc. of each state. Additionally, it includes major expenditure on education undertaken by other state departments and budgets on education for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
2. For Punjab, the budget documents of 2021-22 are unavailable online and hence it could not be included in the state-wise comparison.
