What is it? The magnitude by which April 2017 was warmer than the global mean temperature from 1951-1980 (base period).

Why is it important? The deviation makes last month the second-warmest April in history, according to Nasa. Last year’s April was 1.06 degree-Celsius warmer than the base temperature and was the hottest. Both 2015 and 2016 clocked high temperatures consistently, with 2016 being the warmest year in history, a result carbon dioxide and other human-led emissions into the atmosphere. This year the mercury has not shot up as much as in 2016 but since February, has clocked second-highest temperatures ever.

What is it? The consolidated net loss of steel major, Tata Steel, in the fourth quarter of 2016-17.

Why is it important? The loss was less than the one in the fourth quarter of FY16 (of Rs 3,041.88 crore) but it marks the removal of an obstacle to merging its European operations with the German ThyssenKrupp in a joint venture. The pensions scheme at its UK operations had been the hurdle. This quarter, the loss was primarily due to exceptional items amounting to Rs 4,069 crore, which included resolution of the pension claims of its UK employees.

What is it? The number of new taxpayers brought within the income tax ambit by the authorities after the demonetisation drive.

Why is it important? The new taxpayers amount to almost 25% of the count of taxpayers last season (37 2015-16). The finance minister, Arun Jaitley, says out of the new taxpayers in the net this year, 1.8 million have been identified with cash transactions not in line with their income profiles.

What is it? The amount Incred, a non banking finance company backed by Anshu Jain, former Co-Chief of Deutsche Bank aims to disburse by March next year, primarily to small and medium sector.

Why is it important? It comes at a time when big banks, saddled by bad loans, are shying away from lending to SMEs. Incred said in April that it has disbursed Rs 100 crore (or a little over $15 million) in its first 100 days of its operations.

Why is it important? Henderson Island, located in the South Pacific Ocean, is uninhabited, remote, and visited only once in five to 10 years. It has the highest concentration of human-activities generated debris – estimated to weigh over 250,000 tonnes – recorded anywhere in the world, washed ashore by the sea, and serves as an indicator of marine pollution.

Of the officers who joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) between 2011 and 2013, 70% come from non-traditional backgrounds for civil services such as medicine, engineering, arts and management. The Bureau of Police Research and Development is picking up some of the innovative policing initiatives of such officers for its national ‘SMART’ policing programme. The Indian government is planning to set up a ‘SMART’ police station in each state soon. India is facing a shortage of IPS officers: 23% of the authorised IPS officer strength was vacant, as on January 1, 2013.

The lock-in period of promoters’ pre-listing capital on the Bombay Stock Exchange’s SME (small and medium enterprises) platform, as proposed by taxation consultancy PwC. This includes preferential allotments as well and is intended to check tax evasion and other fraudulent activities. A total of 100 firms are on the BSE SME platform. The capital market regulator recently banned four companies and 235 entities (including individuals) for misusing the platform to make illegal gains of Rs 614 crore through suspected money laundering and tax evasion activities. The SMEs listed on this platform have raised over Rs 750 crore as on July 17, 2015.

India plans to award solar contracts for the supply of 15,000 MW this year. The government has set a target of installing 100,000 MW of solar power by 2022, which would entail a capital investment of about $200 billion. In 2014-15, the cumulative solar power capacity in India was about 3,744 MW, accounting for about 10.5% of the total renewable energy generated in the country.

The number of people in Tamil Nadu who committed suicides in 2014 because of “ideological causes or hero worship”. The southern state, which witnesses fans offering milk, coconuts, fruits and flowers (as a form of worship) to the banners of their favourite actors, accounts for the highest number of deaths among all states due to hero worship. Tamil Nadu also accounts for over 500 suicides due to “love failures”, the second highest in the country. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal accounted for over a third of the total number suicides in India in 2014.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes has issued an order to its regional offices to bring in an additional 10 million people under the tax net within this financial year. In the region-wise list, Pune region has the highest target of bringing in over 10% of the total number of to-be-assessees. As of now, about 35 million, or about 3% of the Indian population, pays taxes.
