What is it? Amount of loan given to Videocon that Dena Bank has classified as a non-performing asset.

Why is it important? Videocon owes more than Rs 22,000 crore to domestic financial institutions, and an equivalent amount to international banks. The diversified conglomerate has asked Dena bank to extend tenure of the loan. This move by Dena bank has eroded market capitalisation of Videocon by a third in last two days of trading.

Tell me more: Bad debts is Rs7.7 trillion problem for Indian banks, and the last Economic Survey says 57 out of the top 100 stressed debtors would require debt reductions of 75% or more.

What is it? The number of non-performing government officers forced to seek early retirement after a review.

Why is it important? Periodical review of performance and weeding out of non-performers is expected to improve productivity of government officers. This dismissal of Group A and B officers follows January’s compulsory retirement for two IPS officers on the same grounds. But 2017 is not the first year when the government has meted out punishments to bureaucrats for under-performance.

Tell me more: The officers were picked after a review of the records of 24,000 Group A and 42,251 Group B officers. Reviews of 34,451 Group A and over 42,000 Group B officers are imminent.

What is it? The number of members in the National Commission for Minorities (NCM), after the last member retired in March 9 this year.

Why is it important? NCM has served as a forum of appeal for minorities and the delay in appointing the chairperson, vice chairperson and seven members have rendered this statutory body non-functional.

What is it? A proposal under consideration by Law Commission to limit the incarceration of undertrials to one-third of the maximum punishment for offences that attract up to seven years of imprisonment.

Why is it important? If accepted, it will bring relief to undertrials who are unable to execute bail conditions or afford lawyers because of their poor economic conditions. There are 2.82 lakh prisoners who are undertrials. At present, undertrials are eligible to get released only after serving half the term of the maximum punishment.

What is it? The number of people killed when their bus, full of pilgrims on the Char Dham route, fell into a gorge in Uttarakhand.

Why is it important? This adds to the death toll of pilgrims in this season of the Char Dham pilgrimage in the Himalayas and foothills, whose routes opened in April. While 13 died of a natural calamity — a massive landslide — last week, many others have died of preventable causes. Since April, 16 have died from cardiac arrest, reportedly due to the lack of medical aid. Yesterday’s accident could have been avoided with adequate road safety measures in a route that turns busy in these months.

Tell me more: Officials have now been asked to identify dangerous areas on the pilgrimage routes to set up speed monitors, warnings and crash barriers.

Kashmir: Missing the woods for the trees?

What is it? The number of social networking sites and applications banned in Kashmir, for either a month or till further orders.

Why is it important? Such sites are being blamed for fanning trouble by letting protesters circulate messages and videos, instigating mob fury further. However, it is also being criticised as a stop-gap measure. Internet access was already hobbled by an earlier ban on mobile high-speed data, as students took to the streets in droves to voice dissent from the administration and military force.

Tell me more: Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, Wechat, QQ, Qzone, Google Plus, Skype, Line, Pinterest, Snapchat, Youtube, Vine and Flickr are some of the apps being banned.

What is it? The number of Uttar Pradesh IAS officers who have transferred under Yogi Adityanath administration on Wednesday.

Why is it important? It’s the biggest administrative change that UP chief minister has made since he came to power on March 19th. Large scale transfers are often used by the political leadership to assert themselves. Data shows one out 10 of postings in 20 key departments in the state cadres last only 33 to 71 days. One out of five IAS officers spend less than a year in a posting on average.

What is it? The vacancy in the police department in Uttar Pradesh.

Why is it important? India’s most populous state has more than double the vacancy of the national average of 24%, and also the highest. While the sanctioned strength is 363,000, there are only 181,000 police personnel deployed in the state. The vacancies in IPS ranks in UP was revealed in the Parliament a few weeks ago. While the national average vacancy in IPS was 18.9%, UP had 22% vacant posts.

Tell me more: Only Nagaland was has a surplus in their police force, with 22,264 personnel against 21,574 sanctioned posts.

Why is it important? The growth rate, as per company releases, indicates robust gains. The largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki, posted an 8% and second-largest, Hyundai, a 9% growth. March has been the best month for passenger vehicle sellers since the days of demonetisation that dampened consumer spending.

The hitherto free services which would eventually draw a Rs-303 monthly fee from April, 15, has made it the wireless operator with the largest subscriber additions in February. It accounted for 73% of the total 27.8 million additions in February.

Why is it important? The H1B cap of 85,000 got filled within a week. The application process for this year begins today, in a political environment far different from last years. Donald Trump administration is far less welcoming of foreign workers and the US congress is looking at several bills that call for H1B reforms. Thenumber of applications by Indian IT firms will be keenly tracked.

Tell me more: Indian IT companies are big users of H1B, and reforms in US would force them to change their strategy, and be less dependent on H1B visas. Some firms – including Infosys and Wipro, have been moving in that direction for some time now.

What is it? The annual retainer fee of grade A cricketers, which the BCCI doubled from last year.

Why is it important? Following the performance in the last few test matches against Australia, players such as Ravindra Jadeja and Cheteshwar Pujara will also be eligible for this remuneration as they have been upgraded to grade A.

Tell me more: Grade B cricketers will receive Rs 1 crore and grade C Rs 50 lakh, annually. The pay-hike follows October’s doubling of match fees to Rs 15 lakh a match.

What is it? Number of vacant Indian Administrative Services posts.

Why is it important? These posts, crucial for the bureaucracy and administrative machinery of the country, remain vacant despite being authorised to be filled. Indian Forest Services and Indian Police Services also have 560 and 908 posts vacant, which are otherwise sanctioned to be filled up. The numbers have come down from 2012, when IAS had over 1,700 vacancies and IPS over 1,200.

Tell me more: The government says recruiting has been stepped up for IAS in the last four years, while for IFS recruiting was increased in the 2015 examinations and for IPS in the 2009 examination.

Why is it important? This is the result of the social media platform’s increased efforts to curtail terror propaganda and terror recruitment handles. It is working with organisations such as People against Violent Extremism and the Lumen database to sieve accounts promoting violent terrorism.

Tell me more: In 2016, Twitter had blocked accounts related to Islamic State, the extremist group, for example. No less than 376,890 accounts were suspended in July-December, 2016, for promoting terrorism.

What is it? The amount India gave as aid to foreign countries in 2015-16.

Why is it important? It is more than what the country received as aid from multi-lateral organisations/foreign countries, making India a net donor. It is a key element of foreign policy — especially with respect to its neighbours. Most of the aid went to neighbouring countries — primarily Bhutan, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, in that order.

Tell me more: Global Fund and European Union are the top two providers of aid to India. Global Fund aims to fight diseases such as AIDS and tuberculosis, and had earlier tied up with Tata Trusts to launch an India Health Fund.

What is it? The number of government hospitals in Delhi, whose resident doctors plan to go on strike today.

Why is it important? It is a sign that the protests by resident doctors in Maharashtra — in its fourth day — is spreading outside the state, and could garner more support from doctors in other states. The doctors are demanding a safer workplace. A doctor was assaulted by a patient’s relatives recently at Dhule. Fifty-three doctors were attacked in last last two years, according to a report.

Tell me more: Bombay High Court had directed the protesting doctors to return to duty. It has had no impact yet. Meanwhile at AIIMS, Delhi, resident doctors said they will work with helmets on as a sign of protest and to highlight the issue.
