Rs 9,300 crore

What is it? Nirma’s buy price for LafargeHolcim’s India cement making and processing assets

Why is it important? This would help LafargeHolcim, the world’s largest cement producer, reduce debt amidst lower demand for cement in some markets including India. It would also help the company comply with some competition rules in India, ahead of Holcim – Lafarge SA’s global merger. As for Nirma, detergent and soap maker, this would help the group establish itself as a commodity conglomerate.

Tell me more: The deal includes three cement plants and two processing facilities with a total capacity of around 11 million tonnes per annum. LafargeHolcim will continue to operate in India through its subsidiaries ACC and Ambuja Cements.

Rs 180.36 crore

What is it? The box-office collections of the Hindi movie ‘Sultan’ starring Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma, in five days since it hit the screens on Wednesday (a pre-Eid release).

Why is it important? Salman Khan’s box-office collections seem to be immune to (or aided by) controversies he gets embroiled in. Most recently, he was criticised for a trivialised reference to rape. The movie is likely to be the third movie to earn over Rs 200 crore, joining the list of other Salman-Khan movies ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ and ‘Kick’. It has not only been the biggest opener this year but also, overtaken the lifetime earnings of other 2016 releases including ‘Airlift’ and ‘Housefull 3’.

Tell me more: The movie, a Yash Raj Films production, is a sports-drama film and features the actors as wrestlers.

What is it? The number of hours Supreme Court will work – from 2 pm to 6 pm – every Monday and Friday, starting July 18, to hear the appeals filed by four convicts in 2012 Delhi Gang rape case.

Why is it important? The court’s timings are until 4 pm but on aspecial request by one of the advocates who is defending two of the accused, the apex court agreed to have fixed timings and long hearings to avoid piecemeal hearings and enable delivery of speedy justice. Usually, the three judges hearing the appeals do not sit together but assemble only when the Chief Justice of India constitutes it and there is no fixed time frame for that.

Tell me more: The four accused were awarded death sentence by a trial court in September 2013, which the Delhi High Court upheld six months later. The convicts then moved the Supreme Court in 2014, which stayed their execution. The prime accused was found dead in Tihar Jail in March 2013.

Rs 2000 crore

What is it? The amount Housing Development Finance Corp. Ltd (HDFC) wants to raise by issuing masala bonds. A masala bond is a rupee-denominated bond sold overseas.

Why is it important? HDFC is the first Indian business to issue this category of bonds, since Reserve Bank issued its guidelines last year. It would help HDFC diversify its source of funds, while eliminating currency risks associated with issuing bonds overseas.

Tell me more: A bunch of other companies including NTPC Ltd, Shriram Transport Finance Co. Ltd and Dewan Housing Finance Corp.Ltd.  have plans to launch masala bonds, but pricing could be an issue.

43.23 minutes

What is it? The average time spent on Pokemon Go, augmented reality mobile game, by US Android users

Why is it important? That’s 15 minutes more than the time spent on WhatsApp, the app that people spent most time on till the launch of Pokemon Go last week. It comes at a time when tech majors such as Google, Facebook and Twitter are fighting for users time.

Tell me more: The game is estimated to have been downloaded over 7.5 million in US and earned $1.6 million in daily revenues. The original Pokemon games publisher Nintendo’s value is up by $11 billion since its launch.

News in numbers, Oct 27, 2015: InterGlobe’s IPO, government hospitals’ aid for poor patients…

Rs 765

What is it? The price at which Interglobe Aviation Ltd, which runs most profitable airline Indigo, issued shares to anchor investors.

Why is it important? At this price, the company will be valued at around $ 4 billion. The quality of anchor investors and the price they paid will set the tone for the public issue. In this case, they got 43 anchor investors including Fidelity, Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, Goldman Sachs and HDFC Asset Management Company. The price too is at the higher end of the band set for the initial public offer.

Tell me more: Anchor investors can be allotted upto 60% of shares reserved for institutional investors. The initial public offer, which is the largest since 2012, opens today.

$ 750 million

What is it? The amount HDFC Ltd, India’s largest non-bank home loan provider, could raise in rupee-denominated bonds or ‘masala bonds’, per board approval.

Why is it important? This is the first time ever an Indian company will raise a rupee denominated bond from an overseas market. India’s central bank recently gave approval for such rupee denominated bond, but restricted the maturity to five years and borrowing should be within the $ 51 billion overall limit set for  overseas corporate borrowing.

Tell me more: External commercial borrowing stood at $ 28.3 billion at the end of March 2015, and average maturity was 6.49 years.

What is it? The number of ATMs that HDFC Bank, India’s second largest private sector bank, closed down  in July – September this year. This represents 2.36% of its total ATM network.

Why is it important? With more than 80% revenue coming from retail segment, the move by HDFC Bank reflects the changing spending pattern in India where online payment is used more.

Tell me more:  In 2014-15, 703 million transactions amounting to Rs 22,302 billion was done via ATMs. This includes both debit and credit card transactions.

35 districts

What is it? The number of districts in Madhya Pradesh under  drought after two years of deficit rains.

Why is it important? That’s 35 out of 51 districts in the state. Monsoon, which was 12% below normal for Madhya Pradesh, has affected 4.8 million farmers across 33,283 villages, the government claims. The impact will be lower winter crop that is projected to drop to 5.7 mt as against target of 19 mt.

Tell me more: Other states like Karnataka and Maharashtra have declared drought, and few others like Telangana and Uttar Pradesh are likely to follow.

Rs 5 lakh

What is it? The amount of financial assistance that twelve central government hospitals can now provide towards emergency surgeries for poor patients under Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi.

Why is it important? It’s 2.5 times the current allowance of Rs 2 lakh, and it would help poor patients to access costly life saving surgeries. Though the number of central government hospitals are few, State Illness Assistance Fund has been set up in all states with Rs 5 crore contribution from the centre.

Tell me more: Only 17% of India’s population is covered by medical insurance as on March 2014.
