What is it?The number of teenagers aged 15 to 19 who were newly infected with HIV per hour in 2017, according to United Nations children’s fund UNICEF

Why it’s important? This underlines HIV crisis among the teenagers, especially girls. Of the 30, infections, 20 were in girls. UNICEF attributed it to the lack of access to information, services and of power to say no in many countries, making girls most vulnerable.

Tell me more: UNICEF in its report said, 130,000 children under the age of 19 died last year, and 430,000 children were newly infected.

What is it?Facebook’s revenue in the second quarter of 2018, up 42% from last year.

Why is it important?That didn’t stop the market from battering down the stock by nearly 20%, shaving off over $120 billion in its market capitalisation.  Analysts were expecting the technology giant to perform better, and the company executives warned about lower revenues, and smaller margins. This comes at a time when there is an increasing concern over privacy, and regulators are responding by tightening privacy norms.

What is it? Cricketer turned politician Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) lead in the general elections with 30% of the total votes counted.

Why is it important? PTI contested in 272 seats. The assembly has 342 seats, and 172 are needed for a majority. While it’s not clear if PTI will get a majority on its own, or whether it will have to seek coalition partners, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has rejected the results. It said the election was rigged in favour of PTI. PML-N was ahead in 66 constituencies, and the other big political party, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), was ahead in 39. It will be the second civilian transfer of power in the country’s history.

Tell me more: The elections took place in the shadow of killing of 31 people by a suicide bomber near a polling station in Quetta, capital of Balochistan, one of the five provinces in Pakistan.

What is it?The amount government hopes to recover from Reliance Industries, Shell and (Oil and Natural Gas Corp)ONGC over its share from the Panna-Mukta and Tapti fields.

Why is it important? The government has now moved Delhi High Court to enforce the recovery. This follows a ruling by English Commercial Court in May 2018 regarding the government’s share in the fields.

Tell me more: The liability is to be split among the three entities per their stake. ONGC has 40%, RIL and Shell 30% each.




What is it?The tariff that United States president Donald Trump had threatened to impose on auto imports into the US.

Why is it important? Even as United States and European Union had agreed to work on lowering trade barriers, after a meeting with Donald Trump and European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker, there was no mention of tariffs on auto imports. The tariffs will have an impact European car makers such as BMW and Volkswagen.

Tell me more: Among other things, Europe has agreed to lower trade barriers to American soybeans. Earlier Trump announced a $12 billion emergency aid for US farmers.

President’s low vote share


What is it? The number of votes with a value of 702,044 won by Ram Nath Kovind in India’s 2017 Presidential Elections.

Why is it important? Kovind has been elected as the 14th President of India. However, with 65.65% vote share, it is the lowest for a presidential election winner since 1974. Cross voting from opposition parties in favour of NDA-backed candidate, Kovind, was reported in seven states including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Punjab, Assam, West Bengal and Tripura.

Tell me more: Meira Kumar, who was backed by a 17-member bloc of opposition parties, polled in 1,844 votes with a value of 367,314.

What is it? The number of people who died from AIDS-related deaths globally in 2016, according to the UNAIDS.

Why is it important? This is a 48% drop from the peak of such deaths in 2005 (1.9 million AIDS-related deaths). Now, a higher number of people are accessing anti-retroviral therapy – 19.5 million in 2016, up from 17.1 million in 2015 and 7.7 million in 2010. This makes it the first time that more than half of those living with HIV are receiving life-saving treatment. Since 2010, new HIV infections have come down by an estimated 11% in adults to 1.7 million in 2016 and by 47% among children to 160,000 in 2016.

Tell me more: Achieving the 90-90-90 targets (90% of all living with HIV know their HIV status, 90% of those diagnosed with HIV are accessing sustained anti-retroviral therapy and 90% of those receiving this therapy are virally suppressed) by 2020 seems feasible. In 2016, 70% know their HIV status, of this, 77% were accessing treatment and of those accessing treatment, 82% were virally suppressed.



What is it? The percentage of salary and stipend cuts that Jet Airways has reportedly asked its junior pilots to take.

Why is it important? The airline has asked them to take these cuts or quit their jobs. These measures, which are to be implemented fromAugust 1, will impact 400 of its pilots of the approximate strength of 1,500. Jet Airways has attributed its actions slowdown in the Gulf region and to improve operational efficiency.

Tell me more: Jet Airways, which faces stiff competition from low-cost airlines such as Indigo and SpiceJet, saw its market share fall to 18% at the end of June this year from 23% two years ago.



What is it? The number of runs scored by cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur in the semi-finals against Australia in the Women’s World Cup.

Why is it important? The innings is the “third-highest score in a world cup and fifth-highest overall”. Before this match, India has won less than 30% of the matches against Australia, which has won the world cup six times.

Tell me more: This is Team India’s second time at the women’s ICC World Cup finals (after 2005). The semi-final match was cut down to 42 overs due to rain. India will now face England in the World Cup finals on July 23.


Rs 9,079 crore

What is it? The net profit of Reliance Industries (RIL) for the first quarter of FY18, ended June 30, an increase of 28%.

Why is it important? The gross refining margins – the profit from turning one barrel of crude oil into fuel – was at a nine-year high. Its gross refining margin was $11.9 a barrel, higher than the average Singapore benchmark at $6.4 a barrel in the June quarter.

Tell me more: RIL also gained from selling 76% stake in the Gulf Africa Petroleum Corp, a South African subsidiary, for Rs 1,087 crore.

What is it? The percentage of fines imposed by India’s competition regulator of India that it managed to collect, as per its annual report of 2013-14. In absolute terms, the Competition Commission of India imposed fines of Rs 9,886 crore, of which it recovered Rs 72 crore. The remainder is either stuck in appeals or has been stayed.

Why is it important? The regulator, in its six years of existence, has initiated action against prominent names in several sectors. In its latest action on Tuesday, the CCI fined three airlines — Jet, IndiGo and SpiceJet — for colluding to fix fuel surcharge in cargo transport. But seeing the cases through and collecting the amount fined has proven to be elusive.

Tell me more: Some of the other major CCI fines have been against real estate company DLF (Rs 630 crore), against 14 car manufacturers (Rs 2,545 crore) and 11 cement majors (Rs 6,200 crore).

What is it? The number of people worldwide who were living with HIV, of which, 2.6 million were children below the age of 15 years. India had 2.1 million cases in 2013.

Why is it important? On Tuesday, American actor Charlie Sheen, best known for his roles in Wall Street and Two and a Half Men, said in a television interview to NBC that he had been diagnosed HIV-positive four years ago. He also said he had been sexually active after the diagnosis, while maintaining he had disclosed his condition to his partners.

Tell me more: At least 33 states in the US have laws that mandate people infected with HIV to disclose that fact to their sexual partners.



What is it? The approximate stake bought by US investment fund Tiger Global in global online retailer Amazon in the September quarter.

Why is it important? Tiger Global, one of the most aggressive investors in Internet businesses in India, is the largest investor in Indian retailer Flipkart. In India, Amazon and Flipkart are rivals, and the common presence of Tiger Global will be a source of conversation, possibly consternation. Back in 2014, Myntra was merged into Flipkart at the behest of common investors, one of them being Tiger Global.

What is it? Share of mobile phone in the Internet traffic of India, which is thrice the corresponding figure for the US, according to a May 2015 report by venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB).

Why is it important? It is a measure of where the growth in Internet adoption and usage is coming from in India, and reaffirms why a high Internet penetration number in this decade might be in the realm of the possible. Another report by Internet and Mobile Association of India and IMRB International, released on Tuesday, tipped India to hit 402 million Internet users by December and leapfrog the US as the country with the second-largest Internet user base, after China.

Tell me more: According to the second report, men account for 71% of Internet users in India and women 29%, and that 69% of users were using  



What is it? The number of sugar stocks that hit the upper price band in trading on Tuesday on the Bombay Stock Exchange, suggesting some sort of a turnaround for a sector reeling under a cash crisis and dues to farmers.

Why is it important? The wide expectation is that sugar production in 2015-16 will be lower than in 2014-15, which will hold prices of this essential commodity, even fuel them. Credit ratings agency ICRA has projected a 4.6% drop in production to 26.8 million tonnes in 2014-15.

Tell me more: In October, the Central government announced a string of measures to help companies and release arrears to farmers.
