Why is it important? The telecom industry is already reeling under debts of Rs 4 lakh crore (as of March 31) and the notices come ahead of the expensive spectrum auction scheduled for mid-July. The demand from DoT is unlikely to be resolved soon. The telecom companies had contested this earlier saying the definition of adjusted gross revenue for calculating license fee is under litigation in various courts, which calls for clearer rules and policies.

At present, starting an environmental project without the government consent is a crime and can lead to imprisonment under Indian laws. Experts say this is a misuse of executive powers to dilute laws made by the legislature.

Tell me more: In the US, environmental violations are civil offences. The joint secretary who issued the draft notification on May 10 (open for comments for two months) has denied copying the content from the US policy and has said that the idea has been borrowed.

Tell me more: TTD wants the government to pay the interest component on medium and long-term schemes to be paid in gold instead of cash and also, calculate the interest on gold at the time of return instead of at the time of the deposit. This, on top of some changes the government had announced on Friday.

Why is it important? The outcome of a compromise between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress party, according to unnamed leaders from these parties. It is a surprising move given the disruptions in the working of the Parliament due to issues such as the suicide of a student at the Hyderabad University, the Jat agitations and the JNU row. The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha have spent just 9% and 8% of the Budget Session on legislative issues respectively so far.

For the Bill to be passed, not more than 82 members must oppose it (assuming all 245 vote). Due to retirees this season, BJP would gain nine seats including seven by way of new appointees, while Congress would lose seven. This would result in those favouring the bill to increase from 97 to 110 and those opposing to 81 members.

Tell me more: The GST Bill is supposed to merge all central and state taxes into a single tax rate and if implemented well, it could boost economic growth by 2-2.5% and increase exports by 10-14%, according to a study.
