What is it? The number of Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists reportedly killed during the surgical strikes by the Indian Army across the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan on the intervening night of September 28 and 29.

Why is it important? The surgical strikes that targeted terrorist launchpads in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir are said to have inflicted the maximum damage on the Pakistan-based Islamic militant organisation, which has been accused of carrying out the 2008 Mumbai attacks. This is based on assessment reports available from Indian Army field units that included radio conversations between different Pakistani formations.

Tell me more: The terrorists were taken by surprise and were killed while running towards a Pakistani post, according to reports. Pakistan has refuted India’s claims of conducting the surgical strikes and said only two of their soldiers have been killed in cross-border firing.

    268 million

What is it? The estimated number of children aged between five and 17 years who would be overweight in the world by 2025 (from 219 million in 2010) if the current trends continue, according to a study.

Why is it important? This means governments would have to deal with rising ill-health and it is no comfort that this estimate includes the number of obese children to increase to 91 million in nine years from 76 million in 2010. This means member nations of the World Health Organization would be unable to achieve their goal of ‘no increase on obesity levels’ by 2025 (based on 2010 levels) for infants, adolescents and adults.

Tell me more: The main reason for obesity is the kind of foodchildren are consuming and that obesity and stunting go hand in hand in poorer countries, according to one of the authors of the published paper. The president of World Obesity Federation, which has compiled the data, has called for tough action by governments to stop companies that sell junk food from targeting children.

    Rs 17.45 lakh

What is it? Sales of renewable energy certificates (RECs) in the April-September period, up by around 58% from Rs 11.05 lakh in the same period a year ago.

Why is it important? Indicates increasing compliance of renewable purchase obligations as power distribution companies and open access and captive consumers are obliged to buy RECs from renewable energy producers (if they are unable to buy a certain share of their power from them) as mandated by central and state regulatory commissions. However, at the end of September 2015, the REC inventory (which are valid only for three years) was 16 million with supply exceeding demand.

Tell me more: One REC is equivalent to 1 megawatt-hour of electricity generated from a renewable energy source.

What is it? Number of people killed in a stampede at a political rally by Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mayawati in Lucknow on Sunday. At least 12 were injured.

Why is it important? Highlights the risks in large gatherings and how unprepared the state agencies are. Over a lakh attended the rally. Mayawati blamed the state police for not making proper arrangements. A rumor of a snapped live power cable started the stampede.

Tell me more: The event took place at Kanshi Ram Memorial at the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar ground in Lucknow to mark the tenth death anniversary of BSP founder Kanshi Ram, even as his followersfight to claim his legacy. Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those who died in the stampede.

What is it? The number of new cardinals of the Catholic Church appointed by Pope Francis on Sunday.

Why is it important? Of the 17, 13 are under the age of 80, which means they will be eligible to vote elect the current Pope’s successor when he resigns or passes away. The new cardinals – the most senior members of the Roman Catholic hierarchy – are mostly from the developing world, including the Central African Republic, Brazil, Bangladesh, Venezuela, Mauritius, Mexico and Papua New Guinea, and underlines their growing influence in the church traditionally dominated by Italy. Only one of the new cardinal is from Italy.

Tell me more: With this, the number of cardinal electors stands at 121 (the limit is 120, but one cardinal will turn 80 this November, bringing the total to 120).
